Apple's Mountain Lion Has Pounced

by Graham Needham (BH) on 25th July 2012

Apple has officially released OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion (yes, the "Mac" has now been officially dropped). We've already got some articles about the new OS online already:

MacStrategy's features of note include:
  • More iCloud integration including "Documents in the cloud" (allows you to synchronise documents across devices)
  • iChat turns into Messages integrates with iOS iMessage
  • Reminders which also integrates with iOS
  • Notes which also integrates with iOS
  • Notifications like those on your iPhone/iPad/iPod touch
  • Power Nap some Macs with flash drives can update/backup themselves while asleep
  • Dictation dictate text into any application
  • Airplay Mirroring mirror your display to an Apple TV (2nd generation or later)
  • Gatekeeper - see our security article all about it
  • Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo and Flickr integration (you don't have to use these if you don't want to)
  • Multiple Time Machine backups support - see our article on backups
  • Encrypt external hard disks and Time Machine backups - see our article on securing data
  • (Apple) Mail VIPs flag certain contacts as VIPs and see their email in a special smart mailbox
  • Drag and drop files in screen sharing
Some important points to note:
  • You can upgrade directly from Mac OS X 10.6, you don't need OS X 10.7 Lion (first) but Lion has now been removed from the Mac App Store so if you're still on 10.6 and don't have a 10.8 compatible Mac you're basically stuffed.
  • Software Update has now moved inside the Mac App Store (an Apple ID is now required to install updates).
  • Now that OS X 10.8 is out Mac OS X 10.6 is likely to be discontinued for security updates - see our article on securing older operating systems.
